An ancient town of Maderno was the capital of the Riviera starting from the ninth century, when it became the “Magnifica Patria”, the name taken by more than forty townships from the Brescia shores of the lake. Maderno had to cede the title in 1337, when Beatrice della Scala transferred the government of Riviera to Salò. Toscolano is probably one of the oldest towns of Lake Garda: it seems to be the site of the ancient city of Benacum, that gave its first name to Lake Garda, named by the Romans Benaco.
